Darius Lim

Conductor-Composer Darius Lim is President of the Choral Directors’ Association of Singapore, Deputy General Secretary of the National Instructors' and Coaches Association (Singapore) and the Founder & Artistic Director of Voices of Singapore (Choral Society and Choir Festival). He is Music Director of Voco Singapore Ladies Choir, Voce Singapore Men’s Choir and the Volare Treble Voices. He is one of the most sought-after Singaporean choral composers working today, and is most known for his unique infusion of lyrical, dramatic, instrumental, and theatrical elements in both the choirs he directs as well as his choral music. He has built his career on the vision of building a ‘Singing Singapore’ – where all Singaporeans appreciate and enjoy all forms of singing – through creating, innovating, inventing, touching and inspiring people from all walks of life through music.

 

With a strong belief in instilling lifelong appreciation for choral music and promoting Singaporean music, Darius has carved a reputation as an advocate of choral music whose choirs and works inspire, engage, educate and entertain audiences around the world. He has given lectures on choral conducting at the Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music and the School of the Arts, Singapore. He has also given conducting and choir workshops in Singapore, America, Hong Kong, Malaysia, and United Kingdom.

 

Lim’s extensive work in the choral art includes chorus-master for Humperdinck’s Hansel & Gretel with the Orchestra of the Music Makers, John Sharpley’s Fences- An Opera in Two Acts, Aseanapol in Harmony, Unity in Diversity and Phua Chu Kang The Musical. He has sung with renowned choirs such as the BBC Chorus of Wales and Cardiff Polyphonic Choir. He has held former posts as Associate Choirmaster of the Singapore Symphony Children’s Choir and Music Director of the National University of Singapore Society Choir. In the past decade, he has risen to prominence in the national and international music scene with more than 40 national and international awards that include Gold medals, 1st and 2nd Prizes, Category Champions, and other special prizes in both local and international choral and composition competitions. Lim has also adjudicated numerous international choral competitions as jury member and is a highly sought after international choral clinician. 

 

Choirs under Lim’s direction have shared the stage with some of the world’s most celebrated groups that include the Vienna Boys’ Choir, Philomela (Finland), the Hong Kong Children’s Choir, and the University of London Chamber Choir. Youth and children’s choirs under Lim's baton have been presented in numerous national events such as the Singapore Youth Festival Opening & Closing concerts, Singapore Youth Festival Presentations, Singapore Youth Festival Celebrations, Aseanapol in Harmony Celebrations and Singapore Youth Festival International Night. 

 

Lim studied composition under Minni Ang and Eric Watson at the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts. His choral works have been performed by world-renowned choirs such as VOCES8, The Choir of Royal Holloway, Hong Kong Children’s Choir, Leioa Kantika Koral, Diocesan Girls’ Choir, and the University of North Texas Women’s Choir just to name a few. His works have been performed in China, United States, Hong Kong, Australia, Japan, Spain, South Korea, Finland, Malaysia, Taiwan, Russia, Mexico, United Kingdom, South Africa, and The Philippines. Lim has also been a featured composer in the New Music segment of Choir & Organ, of which his composition Gloria! Alleluia! was written for and recorded by the Choir of Royal Holloway. He is published internationally by Edition Peters, Walton Music and Cypress Publishing, and also self-publishes his choral works on his website www.dariuslim.com.

 

An established concert pianist, Lim studied with Benjamin Loh and Yu Chun Yee . He has performed the Liszt Piano Concerto No.1 with the Braddell Heights Symphony Orchestra and has given numerous piano recitals in Asia. His awards include the Gold Prizes in the 2nd and 3rd International Piano Festival and Competition in South Korea, 1st Prize in the Cristofori Piano Competition, and the Silver Medalist of the 6th Asian Youth Music Competition (Open Category).

 

Committed to building and grooming the next generation of singers, Lim instructs some of the most outstanding local school choirs, namely Catholic High Edward Becheras Junior Choir, Crescent Girls' Choir, Haig Girls' School Choir, Junyuan Primary School Choir, Paya Lebar Methodist Girls' School (Primary), Temasek Primary School Choir, and Temasek Secondary School Choir.

A former conducting student of BBC Choral Director Neil Ferris and Dr Sarah Tenant-Flowers, Darius Lim graduated from the Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama (UK) with a Masters in Choral Conducting (with Distinction). He is currently a doctoral candidate at the Queensland Conservatorium of Music pursuing Doctor of Musical Arts.
