Gerald Tan
Conductor
Chorus of the People (Inspire) and VOS Children’s Choir (PGA)
Gerald Tan is a choral educator, arranger and advocate who brings together music education, performance and cultural representation to support and enrich the choral community.
He holds a Master of Music in Music Education, a degree in Sociology and certifications in Voice, Piano and Conducting. This blend of musical training and sociological insight shapes Gerald’s holistic approach to music-making, where he values not only artistic excellence but also the social and cultural contexts that give music meaning.
As a choral educator, Gerald directs several primary and secondary school choirs across Singapore and teaches at the Voices of Singapore choral society. His teaching is grounded in inclusivity, nurturing confidence, musical literacy and a love of ensemble singing in every chorister, regardless of background or experience.
Gerald’s choral arrangements have been performed internationally. His writing highlights pedagogical clarity and accessibility, enabling singers of different skill levels to experience the joy of expressive, well-crafted music.
He is also founder and Chief Editor of Muziksea, Southeast Asia’s largest choral music publisher. Guided by his sociological perspective, Gerald leads the platform with a focus on representation, equity and cultural advocacy.
Beyond the usual choral tradition, Gerald is the founder and singer of The Jolly Four, a barbershop quartet. Within a short time, the group achieved recognition winning a gold award at their first competition. Steve Scott of the Barbershop Harmony Society has described The Jolly Four as “Singapore’s premiere barbershop ensemble.”
In his free time, Gerald explores the limits of the human voice, working on subharmonics, overtone singing and the elusive whistle register. Away from music, he is an aviation enthusiast who can tell an A350 from a B777 at a glance, a fan of strategy and simulation games and a lifelong Star Trek admirer who is inspired by its optimistic vision of humanity.
