Josephine Sim
Conductor
VOS Silver Voices (Sapphire and Amber)
Josephine Sim is a passionate music educator, choral conductor and community advocate with a heart for people, music and God’s creation. She graduated with high honours from the University of Wisconsin–Stevens Point in 1990, earning a Bachelor of Music with credits in both Music and Special Education. During her time there, she received the Chancellor’s Award and the Dean’s Distinguished Achievement Award, and was featured in Who’s Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges. She was also a member of Delta Omicron, an international music fraternity.
Early in her career, Josephine taught A-Level Music at Anglo-Chinese Junior College and developed a music programme for Bukit Panjang Methodist Church Kindergarten. In 1993, she chose to focus on her family and became a stay-at-home mom to care for her children, one of them with Asperger’s Syndrome. Though she stepped away from full-time work, her love for music never faded.
She returned to the choral scene in 2010 and trained for a year under Ms Leona Quek, and earned a Distinction in ABRSM Grade 8 Singing, and has continued learning through various platforms ever since.
Over the years, she has been actively involved in both church and school music. She’s worked with choirs at Fu Hua Primary, Anglo-Chinese School (Primary), Zhen Hua Primary, Jun Yuan Primary, Methodist Girls' School (Primary) and Singapore Chinese Girls' School (Primary). She is a part of the Voices of Singapore community, and was a conductor with the Junior Choirs and an assistant conductor with the Ladies Choir.
Today, Josephine wears many hats. She is the Technical Director of the Bukit Panjang Methodist Church Choir, conducts the Singapore Chinese Girls’ School (Primary) choir and leads the Voices of Singapore Silver Voices—a community choir for seniors aged 60 and above, including those with dementia.
Her ongoing passion is to use music to uplift communities. She looks forward to continuing her work with seniors and being part of her church’s new initiative for children with autism.
