Towards a Better World project

The Towards a Better World project was an initiative by Voices of Singapore (VOS) to restart music-making after the COVID-19 pandemic while addressing global issues through choral music. Held at the historic Pasir Panjang Power Station, the project featured a series of thought-provoking music videos alongside a live concert by the VOS Ladies Choir.

Music Video Recordings

VOS premiered three new choral works composed by Artistic Director & Composer-Conductor Darius Lim as part of this initiative. These works were made available for free use by choirs worldwide until 2024, contributing to the global choral community’s recovery.

A key highlight was the recorded performance of This Too Shall Pass, a tribute to victims of the Covid-19 pandemic and their families. The piece reflects the emotions experienced during the pandemic, juxtaposing themes of love, hope and support with grief, confusion and loss. The visual and musical elements created a powerful statement of remembrance and resilience.

Sounds from a Distant World

The project's culmination was Sounds from a Distant World, a live concert by the VOS Ladies Choir. This marked their first performance since rebranding and their return to live singing after two years. The concert was staged at the Pasir Panjang Power Station, a significant heritage site that once served as one of the nation’s first power sources before its decommissioning in the 1980s.

The contrast between the cold, industrial setting of the power station and the warmth of the choir’s singing symbolised the enduring power of art and culture. The concert programme featured a selection of choral works reflecting themes of hope, transformation and renewal. All proceeds from ticket sales supported VOS’ community outreach programmes in 2022, furthering the organisation’s mission of making choral music accessible to all.
